Genuine Antique Map

1904

Maker: H.M. Pettit.

Antique black and white bird's eye view map of the Panama Canal showing locks, lakes, bays, ships, and more. Inset shows the route ships would take from San Francisco to New York throught the canal. This map was published in 1904 by the Crowell Publishing Company. 1904 is when the US took over the Panama Canal project, which was begun in France in the late 1800s but abandoned. The canal took 10 years to finish and the canal was officially done in 1914, but this map was produced to educate and excite the public who were likely curious about the new project the US was beginning. Under the title are the Latest Facts including cost, distances, and work being done. This map offers an interesting look into a moment in history when human engineering was changing the world. Very good antique condition with two small abbrasions near the title box, and some discoloration mostly in outer margin. Photo shows map in plastic- please disregard the glare and sticker. Approx. 12.75 x 20.25 inches to the neatline. **SOLD**
