Impressive antique map on two joined sheets showing North America with California as an island, by Alexis-Hubert Jaillot, c. 1690.
This map is is derived from Guillaume Sanson's Amerique Septentrionale, 1669, with some changes. The exquisitely designed cartouche bears the crown and arms of Monsegnieur le Dauphin, the heir apparent to the French throne. A large Florida is connected to Mexico, what is now Georgia and South Carolina is labeled Floride Francoise or French Florida, New York and Cape Cod are labeled New Netherlands and New Holland (Nouveau Pay-Bas and N. Holland), all of the West is New Mexico with notes of Quivira, the fabled city of gold. Also included are New Sweden near Maryland, New Denmark in what is now Canada, Terra de Iesso or Japan appears quite close to California, and Great Britain with parts of France and Spain can be found on the far right of the map. The French gave considerably more respect and attention to the lands of the Native American tribes than other European cartographers of the period, noting the locations of the Iroquois, Huron, Algonquin and in the West, the Navajo, and the various Apache tribes in and around present-day Texas and New Mexico. A fascinating look at how the French saw North American near the close of the 17th century, and a desirable collector's piece. Fair to good antique condition with mild spots and soiling, some small tears at the paper edges, and a larger separation at the center fold bottom (poorly repaired). Vibrant original hand-coloring. Measures approx. 21.75 x 34.5 inches to the neatline.
