Genuine Antique Map

1579

Maker: Ortelius

Antique map of England and Wales by Abraham Ortelius, c. 1579. From an edition of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum with Latin text. This map is undated but has 1579 hand-written on the back in pencil. Shows cities, towns, rivers, some topography. Some topography and forests shown pictorially. Ships fill the seas, along with some monstrously large fish, and a small flock of sheep appear in Ireland. Highly decorative cartouche and scale of miles. Poor to fair antique condition with a water stain at top, some foxing in the margins, and damage along the center fold, seemingly from an amateur repair. A previous owner extended the margins somewhat clumsily but this can be hidden under a mat when framing. Measures approx. 13.5 x 19.5 inches to the neatline.
