Maker: Vaugondy / Diderot
Antique uncolored map of Northeast Asia, by Vaugondy, c.1773. This is from Diderot’s encyclopedia and includes four smaller inset maps. Diderot’s maps were one of the first surveys of comparative cartography, tackling a number of the early misconceptions of the west coast of North America and the Northeastern Asian Coastline. The inset maps are California, Nova Granada, Tolm Regnum Nova Granata, and Anian Regnum, Quivira Regnum and Tolm Regnum. The larger map shows northern and eastern Russia from Sweden to Anian (approximate Alaska) with Japan, Korea, and Siberia. Good restored condition with a repaired tear and some image transfer. Has been archivally cleaned and backed. Measures approx. 11.75 x 15.25 inches to the neatline.
