1948
Maker: Claretta Pope Higgins.
A classic Cape Cod map in cranberry color, by Claretta Pope Higgins, 1948. This charming map features notes about each town, such as "Chatham, Elbow of the Cape" and Yarmouth, house with seven chimneys," as well as notes about the Pilgrims, pirates ("Capt Kidd Treasure still looked for", and more modern notes about the Crosby Cats and Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory. The Sacred Cod sits prominently below the compass rose and a list of Old Cape Names cover the wings of a giant bird at the bottom. Perhaps the most eye-catching feature is the decorative border, comprised of scallop shells, birds, fish, and ships, each with a recipe. The artist encourages her audience to "cut out map in center and use as wall decoration. Cut individual silouettes and paste on cabinets. Use own brush work to join them. It's fun!" Perhaps this explains why so few of these maps have appeared on the market. Claretta Pope Higgins was a Cape Cod local by the end of her life- she died in Eastham in 1985. Excellent condition with only slight toning and wear at the paper edges. Measures approx. 26 x 25.25 inches to the paper edges.
