In 1756, the Mohawk River valley was a critical, embattled frontier during the French and Indian War, marked by the pivotal French destruction of British Fort Bull on March 26, 1756. . This refers to the fortified home of Johann Jost Herkimer (sometimes historically spelled Harkemeis, Herchheimer, or Herkimer), located on the south bank of the Mohawk River. Fort Herkimer\/German Flats: Johann Jost Herkimer, a German settler, established a home and trading post that was fortified to serve as a refuge for local residents and a defense against raids during the French and Indian War. The fort was located across the river from the current village of Herkimer. The Old Fort Herkimer Church, built later (completed 1767), stands near the site of these earlier fortifications.
