Pease, 1850. This map was made in 1850, copied from an earlier map of around 1756. Fort Bull was built in 1755 and destroyed in 1756. In 1756, the Mohawk River valley was a critical, embattled frontier during the French and Indian War, marked by the pivotal French destruction of British Fort Bull on March 26, 1756. German Flats: Johann Jost Herkimer, a German settler, established a home and trading post that was fortified to serve as a refuge for local residents and a defense against raids during the French and Indian War. The fort was located across the river from the current village of Herkimer. The Old Fort Herkimer Church, built later (completed 1767), stands near the site of these earlier fortifications. Black and white engraving. Measures approx. 7 x 11 inches to the neatline. Folds as issued.
