Genuine Antique Map

1895

Maker: U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey.

Antique black and white map published by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, 1895, to show the boundary between Alaska and British Columbia in Canada. Includes topographical details, etc. Map shows the coasts as far north as Cape Yakataga (shown as Cape Yaktag) and as far south as the northern portion of Prince of Wales Island. In 1869 an American military survey determined the Hudson Bay Companyâ ‚¬ „¢s illegal occupation in Alaska and deported their representatives upriver. This led to further recognition of the need to establish unequivocally and permanently the location of the border in order to avoid future conflicts. Initial work on determining the precise location of the 141st meridian began in 1887. From 1889 to 1895, several additional surveys were made of the 141st meridian in the Klondike region. The official boundary was settled in 1903 with the help of these survey maps. With folds, as issued. Very good overall antique condition with mild toning throughout and some very mild separation at the intersections of the folds. Measures approximately 25.75" x 13.5" (H x W) to the neatline.
