Genuine Antique Map
1634
Maker: Tassin.
Antique map of Normandy, France by Christophe Tassin, 1634. A very rare and beautiful map of Normandy, produced by Christophe Tassin for his atlas titled Les Cartes générales de toutes les provinces de France. It is adorned with a title cartouche and a cartouche containing the scale of distances. The latter is decorated with a large and beautiful vignette depicting the god Neptune, armed with his trident, riding a chariot drawn by sea monsters. The sea is embellished with a compass rose and sailing ships. A Royal Cartographer, Christophe Tassin—frequently, albeit erroneously, known by the first name Nicolas—established himself as an engraver in Paris, where he produced various collections of small maps and plans. Vibrant hand-coloring. Good to very good antique condition with overall toning, some spots and stains, some wear at the paper edges, and some glue along the top in the margin with bits of old mat board. Mild waviness of the antique paper. Most of the imperfections can be hidden with a mat when framing. Measures approx. 14.5 x 20.25 inches to the neatline.
