Genuine Antique Hand Colored Map

c. 1612-1627

Maker: John Speed.

Antique hand colored map of Anglesey, Wales, engraved by Jodocus Hondius and published by John Speed. This map is from one of the earlier editions of Speed's renowned "Theatre Of The Empire Of Great Britain". Speed's county maps were, and remain, amongst the most popular and sought-after because of the decorative and informative content. Most have the arms of local dignitaries and town plans, in many cases the first of those locations and surveyed by Speed himself. For this atlas, Speed had prepared the maps for engraving before 1610, and they appeared in the first atlas two years later. Inset map of Beaumaris. Also features a deocaritve cartouche with the Royal Arms supported by lion and unicorn, decorative distance scale, and a decorative compass rose. "Performed by John Speed and are to be sold in Popes head alley by John Sudbury and George Humbell." This map is framed and can be sold unframed by request. The map appears to be in good to very good condition with some mild foxing, some wrinkles and possible back-side patch in the lower right corner. Total dimensions including the frame: approx. 18 x 22.5 inches. **NOTE- because this map requires extra insurance for shipping, an additional charge will appear on your card after your original purchase. If you would like to know what that charge will be, please contact us.** **SOLD**
