Maker: Sanson
Spectacular map showing California as an island by Sanson, 1665. This is the first map to show a regional view that includes California as an island, although much of the area was still unknown, and it is the 5th state of the map. It includes Quivira, the legendary city of gold, two bays on the northern end of the island, a mysterious peninsula at the north, and a large lake connected to the Mer Rouge which could be the Great Salt Lake (based on descriptions and hearsay). Very good condition with some minor spots/stains, some mild toning, some slight image transfer. Measures approx. 8 x 9.25 inches to the neatline.
