Genuine Antique Map

1778

Maker: J Johnson

Antique map of the Pacific Ocean, engraved by Matthew Smith published by Joseph Johnson in 1778. This rare map shows the tracks of many explorers, including Captain James Cook, Capt Wallis, Capt Furneaux, Commodore Byron, Capt Carteret, and others. New Zealand is well mapped, but parts of the coasts of Australia, New Guinea, Tierra del Fuego, etc. are yet unknown. This map was published before the information from Cook's third voyage was known. Hand-colored. Good to very good antique condition with some image transfer from text on the right side, some darkness near the left side fold. With folds as issued. Measures approx. 7 x 13 inches to the neatline and 14 x 19 inches including the mat.
