Full Title: A Generall Mapp of the Isles of Great Brittaine Designed by Monsieur Sanson, Geographer to the French King & Rendered Into English & Illustrated by Ric. Blome. By His Majestis Especiall Command
Antique map of the UK published in Geographical Description Of The Four Parts Of The World, the first atlas to be engraved and published wholly in England, by Richard Blome, c. 1669. Red color throughout the map shows the locations of cities. This scarce copper plate map covers all of Great Britain with the Shetland Islands shown in a small inset at upper right. Blome began engraving maps for his atlas in 1667. The 24 maps in the atlas were engraved by Francis Lamb, Thomas Burnford and Wenceslas Hollar. This map is based on a map by the French map maker Sanson and was translated by Blome and engraved by Lamb in c. 1669. Blome was a prolific publisher of cartographic and heraldic material who utilized the subscription method to finance his ventures. Blome offered to add the subscriber's coat of arms in exchange for their patronage, thus leading to numerous editions in the later published maps. The map is embellished with a large and elaborate heraldic cartouche with a dedication to Charles the Second just below, and numerous sailing ships and sea monsters shown in the seas (these embellishments were not on the Sanson map and were done to cater to the English market). In very good restored condition. This map has been archivally cleaned. Lacking margin. Measures approx. 16 x 20.5 inches.
