Genuine Antique Map

1640

Maker: Louis Cundier

Antique map of the French Riviera from Sanremo to Aigues-Mortes circa 1640 by Louis Cundier and published in The Chorography or Description of Provence and the Chronological History of the same country. The subtitle reads: "traced & engraved by Louis Cundier on the Memoirs of Jacques Maretz his father-in-law from the City of Aix, professor of Mathematics; Corrected in a few places by Sr H[onoré] B[ouché]." Includes Monaco, Nice, Cannes, Antibes, Cap-d'Ail, Beaulieu-sur-Mer, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Villefranche-sur-Mer, Juan-les-Pins, and Theoule-sur-Mer. The map shows the area as far north as Valence and includes Arles, Avignon, Nimes, Aix-en-Provence, and many more towns. Illustrated topography, two compass roses, decorative cartouche and scale of miles, and handsome illustrations of ships in the Mediterranean Sea. Very good antique condition with folds as issued. Some minor wrinkles at the paper edges and some other mild edge wear and tear consistent with age. A couple of small spots. Measures approx. 12.75 x 19.25 inches to the neatline. Photos show the same map in different lighting (studio lighting vs. regular indoor).
