Antique map of Tours, France, by Sebastian Munster c.1598, from "Cosmographia- Beschreibng Aller Lander Durch". This handsome medieval map of the city is surrounded by a stylized border filled with grotesque faces and monstrous creatures. The map shows an impressive view of the city from above, a bird's-eye view, long before planes or even hot air balloons. The ancient city walls are clearly visible, the churches tower over the smaller homes and businesses, bridges stretch over the Loire and Cher Rivers, and angels float above the city holding crests. Color is likely later. As with many Munster maps, there is printing on the back side relating to the map. Fair to good antique condition, with some stains, spots, foxing, some darkening at the fold. Measures approx. 10.25 x 13.5 inches to the edges of the decorative border.
