C. 1612-1616
Maker: John Speed.
Antique hand colored map of the Isle of Man by John Speed. This map is from one of the earlier editions of Speed's renowned "Theatre Of The Empire Of Great Britain" probably C.1612-1616. Later versions include amendments and alterations to publishers' imprints. This map is drawn from Durham's earlier map of 1595, as mentioned by Speed on the plate. Speed's maps often have the arms of local dignitaries and town plans, in many cases the first of those locations and surveyed by Speed himself. For this atlas, Speed had prepared the maps for engraving before 1610, and they appeared in the first atlas two years later. Also includes a metalwork title cartouche with a royal crest on the left and the Isle of Man's crest on the right and a compass rose, a scale cartouche, and sea monsters bearing riders holding the flags of the nearby countries. On verso is an English text chronicle of the Kings of Man, information about Man Iland, and a table of the Townes, Villages, Castles, Rivers, and Havens within the Ile of Man. Overall good to very good condition with slightly wavy paper, toning and some darkening at the paper edges. Color may be later. Center fold as issued. Highly collectible early edition Speed map. Measures approx. 15 x 20 inches to the neatline. **SOLD**
