Genuine antique leaf from a tiny Book of Hours, with gold illumination of one letter on each side. The text translates in part as: Grace has been poured freely into your lips. Because of this, God has blessed you in eternity. This small Book of Hours was believed to have been made in France circa 1490. A Book of Hours was a popular medieval Christian devotional book for laypeople, containing prayers, psalms, and readings for specific times (hours) of the day, structured around devotion to the Virgin Mary and other saints, often personalized and lavishly decorated with illuminated manuscripts. They became medieval bestsellers, reflecting a growing lay desire for personal religious practice, and are now prized examples of Gothic art. Very good antique conditioning with slight soiling at the edges. Measures approx. 4 x 3 inches to the paper edges.
