Maker: Braun & Hogenberg.
Hand colored engraved antique bird's eye view map of the medieval town of Rothenburg in the Franconian section of Bavaria in the late 16th century. The Latin title roughly translates to, "Rothenburg above the Tauber, an elegant Franconian town". One of three city views from a page of "Civitatus Orbis Terrarum" ("World Cities"), Braun and Hogenberg's book of town views. The German word for red is "rot" and it is said that the town, now a popular tourist destination, is named for the red-roofed buildings that look down upon the Tauber River valley. Deeply toned, otherwise very good condition with a few spots, measures 4 x 18.5 inches.
