Antique map of part of South America by Blaeu, c. 1640. This map covers the north-eastern coast including modern day Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana as well as part of Venezuela and part of Brazil with the Amazon River and the Orinoco River. Most notably, this map includes Parime Lacus or Lake Parime. Lake Parime or Lake Parima is a legendary lake located in South America. It was reputedly the location of the fabled city of El Dorado, also known as Manoa, much sought-after by European explorers. Repeated attempts to find the lake failed to confirm its existence, and it was dismissed as a myth along with the city. With decorative cartouche, compass, ships, and a sea monster. An exciting map for a collector who enjoys the apocryphal. Good to very good condition with toning and some minor wear at the paper edges and very slight wear on the paper surface near the center. Measures approx. 14.5 x 19.5 inches to the neatline.
