1872
Maker: L. Karcher
Antique report chart of Nantucket and Vineyard Sounds to Block Island, published for the US Commissioner of Fish and Fisheries in 1872. This chart is rarely on the market and we can find only two known examples-one in the NY public library collection, one in the collection of the Bibliotheque Nationale of France. We had never before seen this chart in our nearly twenty years selling Cape Cod maps and charts. This chart shows the locations of traps and pounds as dark lines in the waters, many of which are numbered and lettered, probably relating to a key that was in the original book within which the chart was issued. An inset map of Woods Hole shows more traps and pounds and has a directional arrow cleverly included in the border. This chart also features water depths, shoals, bays, harbors, islands, etc. It shows from Monomoy Island and Chatham to Narragansett Bay with Buzzards Bay, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, the Elizabeth Islands, and more. Good antique condition with some minor toning along the folds and some separation along one of the folds on the left side that has been repaired with tape. Measures approx. 18.5 x 38 inches to the neatline.
