Genuine Antique Map
1898
Maker: Richards
Antique map of Worcester County, Massachusetts, published by Richards in 1898. This map was not likely made for automobiles, because by 1899 only about 2500 automobiles existed. However, in the 1890s, cycling experienced a tremendous surge in popularity, with men and women embracing this new mode of transportation and recreation. It is possible this map was made moreso for cyclists, although it does not specify, nor does it identify the better roads (many later maps highlight the good roads for cycling or automobiles as opposed to the rutted cart roads best left to horses and carriages). This map includes towns that are now under the Quabbin Reservoir. Fair to good condition with some stains and damage at the edges. Measures approx. 28.25 x 22.25 inches to the paper edges.
