Maker: Drake's History of Boston.

 

Exquisite black and white antique view of Boston, drawn by Pownal (circa 1770) and reproduced in Drake's History of Boston, 1856. Governor Thomas Pownall, a long time friend of Benjamin Franklin and one of the few sympathetic colonial governors in North America, was also an artist, author and mapmaker. He remained a staunch supporter of the American causes as they arose in the 1760s. Interestingly, he was very much in favor of emancipation of the slaves in America.  Very good overall antique condition, with some minor signs of age, such as mild toning and a few spots. Illustration measures 9 x 19.75 inches.  Note: any "rainbows" or strange patterns in the image are called moire pattern- caused by taking a digital photo or scan of the many parallel lines in the print- these are not in the print and we can try to take more photos if you are concerned.
