Genuine Antique Map

1775

Maker: Gentleman's Magazine

Antique map of Boston and its vicinity published in Gentleman's Magazine in 1775. This fantastic map shows the original shape of Boston with the neck and includes Cambridge, Charlestown, Roxbury, Dorchester, Milton, Nahant, Weymouth, Hingham and more. Some delightful old spellings on the map include Roxburgh, Quinzey, Bruster, and Charles Town. The Leventhal Center says "This chart documents the Port of Boston at the dawn of the American Revolution. Under the strain of the Boston Port Act imposed during the winter of 1774-75, New Englanders continued to agitate against their British government. An article accompanying the map is entitled 'An Account of the Proceedings of the American Colonists since the Passing of the Boston Port Bill.' It informs the readers that the Governor had assured the town that 'he will do all in his power to secure the peace and good order of the town' and goes on to list 'the regiments, & companies now at Boston.' " Very good antique condition with a strong strike. Repaired tear and paper loss at bottom is barely noticeable. Folds as issued. These maps usually have tight margins. This map has been matted with an archival mat by a previous owner. Measures approx. 10.5 x 13.25 inches to the neatline.
