1772
Maker: Vaugondy.
Antique uncolored map of North America by Vaugondy, 1772. This is a later edition of Samuel Engel's map of 1764 which is notable for its speculative cartography of the western portion of North America. Engel was cautious not to specifically show a Northwest Passage while at the same time leaving open the possibility that such a passage may indeed exist and this map duplicates his imagined rivers exactly. Other notable features include the legendary city of Quivira, a huge body of water called Lac Michinipi in modern Canada, and an enlarged and imagined Pacific Northwest. The text in the lower left translates to "City of Tahuglauks is according to the description of Baron de la Hontan and may have been taken by some modern geographies for Quivira, to which they give the same position on the alleged West Sea." Overall very good condition with folds as issued. Some additional folds, light image transfer, small spots, and tight margin on the lower left side. Approx. 12 x 14.5 inches to the neatline. **SOLD**
