Hand-colored antique report chart, showing Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, by the US Coast Survey, 1857. With soundings, and information on tides, lighthouses, currents, etc. Antique charts that include the entirety of Cape Cod with Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard are relatively rare- most only show either Cape Cod Bay or Nantucket Sound. The U.S. Coast Survey was tasked with surveying the coasts of the United States and creating survey report charts which would be used to create accurate nautical charts and to update charts as needed. Recent color. Very good overall restored condition, this chart was backed on light-weight paper. Added margin on left side. It still retains some very slight toning along some of the folds and some minor spots. Measures approx. 29 x 31.5 inches to the neatline.
