c. 1895
Maker: J.F. Murray / Old Colony Railroad
Antique printed color folding map of Cape Cod and the Islands, by J. F. Murray for Old Colony Railroad, c. 1895. This map is not dated, but some clues to it's age lie in the railroad on Martha's Vineyard. The railroad there was sold to the Old Colony Steamboat Company, the subsidiary of the Old Colony Railroad that operated the steamships to Oak Bluffs in 1892. They in turn sold the line to Joseph M. Wardell who became its general manager. The railroad continued to operate at a loss and finally closed in 1896. It does appear on this map for the Old Colony Railroad Company, so it seems likely that the map was created sometime between 1892 and 1896 when the railroad closed. The map shows rail roads, country roads, county boundaries, township boundaries, steamship lines, and lighthouses and light ships. Good to very good antique condition with some minor small spots and some separations at fold intersections. Paper jacket is attached and can be folded back for framing. Measures approx. 22 x 18 inches to the neatline.
