Genuine Antique Hand-Colored Map

1853

Maker: U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey.

Hand-colored antique coast chart, Sketch A, no. 5, showing proposed site for a lighthouse on Sow & Pigs Reef. Sow and Pigs Reef is a bar in Dukes County, Massachusetts, off the end of the Elizabeth Islands. It is situated near Cuttyhunk Island. Sow and Pigs reef is one of the fishiest spots in the Northeast. This line of submerged boulders extends southwest from Cuttyhunk at the convergence of Vineyard Sound, Buzzards Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean. When the wind is up and the waves are crashing, it’s also one of the most treacherous places in the Northeast, which is exactly why stripers love it. By the US Coast and Geodetic Survey, 1853. Includes part of Cuttyhunk Island, as well as two recognition profiles of the rocks. With bathymetric data. Very good condition with some tiny/minor spots/foxing and a tight margin on left side. Approx. 16.5 x 14.5" to the neatline.
