Genuine Antique Map

1764

Maker: Pluche.

Antique map of the Americas, published in Concorde de la Géographie des différens âges by Noël-Antoine Pluche, 1764. Printed before Captain Cook's first voyage, this map includes a scattering of islands in the Pacific, many of which were either imagined or based on hear-say. The west coast of North America has a large Sea of the West and some postulated coast including Archipelago Saint Lazare. This map shows the fervent hope that a river would connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans-the Amazon River almost reaches the coast of Peru, the Mississippi River almost reaches the Sea of the West, as do rivers from Hudson Bay and the Great Lakes. Large Spanish Florida, Louisiana Territory, New England with the cities of Boston, Philadelphia, and Charleston. Montreal is labeled M. Real. A fascinating small early map. Very good overall antique condition. Folds as issued, some slight toning at paper edges. Measures approx. 5.5 x 7.75 inches.
