Antique map of the coast of Robinson Crusoe Island with Cumberland Bay, and a view at top showing the mountains visible from the Bay. Most of the Juan Fernandez archipelago's present-day inhabitants reside on Robinson Crusoe Island, and mainly in the capital, San Juan Bautista, located at Cumberland Bay which is on the north coast of the island. The islands became quite famous in the 18th century when Alexander Selkirk was rescued after being marooned on the island for 4 years. The story was widely publicized after his return, becoming one of the reputed sources of inspiration for the English writer Daniel Defoe's fictional character Robinson Crusoe, after whom the island is now named.
