Impressive antique map of part of North America with the Caribbean published by Sayer and Bennett in 1783. This map was published shortly after the American Revolutionary War and it includes the name United States over the new country. This detailed map includes information about the locations of Native American Indians, with Native placenames in the west, as well as early roads, forts, towns, cities, bodies of water, etc. Inset maps of Baffin and Hudson Bay and the Passage by Land to California "discover'd by Father Eusebius Francis Kino, a Jesuit; between the years 1698 and 1701, before which, and for a considerable time since California has always been described in all charts & maps as an island.". Notable features include East and West Florida, Louisiana Territory before the Louisiana Purchase, and interesting boundaries including the Maine/Canada border, Vermont was still part of New York, etc. Issued as four sheets, joined. This is a rare American wall map and very desirable for any collector of early American maps or well-known maps. This map is in very good restored condition. It has been cleaned, backed on fabric and bound with silk ribbon, and recolored in some areas where the color had faded, being loyal to the original. It retains some evidence of age, including a repaired tear on the left side, some minor cracking along the joins. Measures approx. 40 x 45 inches to the neatline.
