1714
Maker: Doppelmayr / Homann
Antique planetary map by Doppelmayr and published by Homann in 1714. This map shows the sun and other planets (Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn) orbiting the Earth. It illustrates the movement of the planets that causes retrogrades (a certain time when a planet appears to move "backward" in the sky) by mapping the locations of those planets in the night sky over the course of however long it required for the planets to move a full rotation and return to the approximate place they began. It took Saturn almost 30 years, Jupiter took 11 years, and Mars took 1 year to complete its orbit. With additional diagrams and information on the sides of the page, as well as an illustration of the planets personified as cherubs, with Earth at the center and the other planets and the sun seeming to dance around it. Very good antique condition with a couple of small spots. Seam repair at bottom appears to be archival. With a fold as issued. Measures approx. 19 x 22.5 inches to the neatline.
