Genuine Antique Map

c. 1786

Maker: Joseph de Laporte

Black and white antique map of the area around Virginia circa 1786 by Joseph de Laporte. This map includes cities such as Williamsburg and Alexandria, Virginia, Baltimore and Annapolis, Maryland, and parts of Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, North Carolina, and the large Louisiana Territory to the west claimed by the French. This map was created around the time of the Pennsylvania Mutiny of 1783 that forced congress out of Philadelphia and caused the creation of Washington, DC. This map shows nothing where the heart of the city would be although it does show Alexandria, which President Washington specifically wanted to be inside the District of Columbia. President Washington chose the site for the city and the corner stones were laid down in 1791, probably just a few years after this map was produced. Good to very good overall antique condition with some minor foxing and spots, mostly in the margins.  Approx. 7 x 8.5 inches to the neatline.
