Genuine Antique Map

1760

Maker: Prevost

Title translation: "General Planisphere To Serve the Intelligence of Navigation and Commerce of Europeans between and in the two Indies"
Fascinating antique map of the world on Mercator's Projection, from Histoire Générale des Voyages by Abbe Prevost (Antoine François Prévost d'Exiles), published c. 1760. Some interesting features to note include the Sea of the West with several rivers and lakes seeming to connect to the East, Canada is labeled near the Gulf of Mexico and Louisiana is placed near Hudson bay, the coasts of Australia, New Zealand, and Alaska are all largely unknown, indicating that this map was made before the voyages of Captain Cook or Wallis. The routes of several other expeditions are indicated. This map was published again by Bonne in the later 18th century, however the Bonne version has one central vertical fold, and this map was folded vertically and horizontally to fit into a much smaller atlas. Very good restored condition. This map has been archivally cleaned, deacidified, and backed. some minor signs of age are still visible, including the original folds. Measures approx. 8 x 12.5 inches to the neatline.
