Genuine Antique Map
1697
Maker: Coronelli
Rare and collectible antique map of the Pacific Ocean by Vincenzo Maria Coronelli, circa 1697. This map shows much of the coastline of the Americas and, notably, the partially-known islands off the eastern coast of Asia. These islands include portions of New Guinea, Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania, Japan, and the Philippines (labeled Aricipelago di San Lazaro). A portion of the coastline of New Zealand is shown hinting that it may be part of the great southern continent. A small section of Tasmania appears as Terra d'Antonio Diemens and a partial coastline of Australia is shown blending into New Guinea. Also notable is California is as an island and the imaginary island of Terra de Iesso depicted as a large landmass between Asia and North America. A notation below the equator states that the Spanish crossed the central Pacific from New Spain to the Philippines in sixty days. The route of Dutchmen is traced (1615-17), which opened a new shipping route from the Atlantic to the Pacific and proved that Tierra de Fuego was an island and not a part of some massive southern continent. Highly decorative cartouche featuring aquatic putti surrounding a large shell filled with pearls and coral. The map is dedicated to Cavalier Giulio Giustinian with the arms of the Holy Roman Empire. Good to very good antique condition with mild foxing, some slight wrinkles/ creases. Center fold as issued. A few small spots and some printer's ink around the platemark. Hand-coloring may be original or may have been touched-up by a previous owner. Measures approx. 17.5 x 23.75 inches to the neatline.
