Genuine Antique Map
c. 1640
Maker: Hondius
Antique map of the South Pole published by Henricus Hondius circa 1640. This early map of the Pole includes some speculative coastlines of a large unknown continent. An empty cartouche in the Pacific side interrupts a chain of islands noted in Latin with "The islands are from New Guinea to the Strait of Magellan, affirmed Hermanus Galego, who was sent to explore them by the King of Spain in 1576." This map features the information from Peter Nuyts' exploration as noted along Australia. Notably absent are New Zealand and Tasmania. This map also includes a few islands outside the circular boundary. The corners of the page are decorated with scenes depicting different peoples of the Southern Hemisphere. Hand-colored. Text in French on verso. We believe this to be the first state of the map. Very good antique condition with some very slight minor staining. Measures approx. 17.25 x 19.5 inches to the neatline.
