Genuine Antique Map

1630s

Maker: Sanson/Tavernier

Antique uncolored map of France, by Sanson/Tavernier, c. 1632. This fascinating map shows the Postal Routes of France, the first printed postal map of France and one of the earliest European postal maps. The map was likely drawn up by Nicolas Sanson d'Abbeville in 1632 and published by Melchior Tavernier. The map appeared in Tavernier's Theatre Geographique. Very good restored condition, map has been cleaned, deacidified, and the center where the fold was has been backed (thus repairing some small seam separations). Some minor signs of age remain, including mild stains and slight waviness of the antique paper. Measures approx. 16 x 20.75 inches to the neatline.
