Genuine Antique Map, Framed

1856

Maker: Fullarton

Antique map of the North Pole with information compiled by J. Hugh Johnson and published by Fullarton in 1856. The McClure Arctic expedition was significant for being the first to successfully discover and transit the Northwest Passage, which it accomplished by both boat and sledging. Robert McClure and his crew spent three years locked in the pack ice aboard HMS Investigator before abandoning the ship and making their escape across the ice. Rescued by HMS Resolute, McClure returned to England in 1854, where he was knighted and rewarded for completing the passage. The expedition discovered the first known Northwest Passage, in the geographical sense, which was the Prince of Wales Strait. Very good condition with a few small spots of foxing. Approx. 10.5 x 9.75 inches to the neatline. Approx. 17.25 x 17 inches to frame edges.
