Antique copper plate map of the area of La Rochelle, France, published by Melchior Tavernier in 1627. Samuel de Champlain was born in La Rochelle and this map was published during his lifetime, although at the time of publication Champlain was spending much of his time in North America. This lovely old map shows nearby towns and cities, forests, rivers, bridges, and islands. Cities include Fontenay-le-Comte, Niort, Rochefort, Saint-Jean-d'Angely, and Saintes. Beautiful decorative cartouches featuring a strapwork and shell or putti design. A few ships and sea monsters travel the waters. Very good antique condition, generally clean with a few minor spots and some areas of lighter imprint.
