Genuine Antique Hand Colored Map

1851

Maker: Levasseur.

Antique hand-colored map of the Department of Var, France, from the Atlas National Illustre des 86 Departments et des Possessions de la France, Divise par Arrondissements, Cantons et Communea, by Levasseur, 1851. Surrounded by exquisitely detailed engraved illustrations and vignettes, as well as statistical and general information.

Var is a department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. The major communes are Toulon, La Seyne-sur-Mer, Fréjus, Hyères, Draguignan, Saint-Raphaël, Six-Fours-les-Plages, La Garde, and La Valette-du-Var.

At this time, Var included part of what is now the Alpes-Maritimes department. The territory that currently makes up the Alpes-Maritimes department did not exist as a single French entity and was divided between the Kingdom of Sardinia and the French Empire. The eastern portion (including Nice, Menton, and Roquebrune) was an Italian-speaking region ruled by the Kingdom of Sardinia (Piedmont-Sardinia). It was annexed to France in 1860, after which the modern Alpes-Maritimes department was created. The western portion (including Grasse, Cannes, and Antibes) was part of the French Empire and was administered as the eastern district of the Var department.

Genuine Antique Map from 1851.
