c. 1853

Maker: Ballou's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion

Antique page from Ballou's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion, c. 1853, with two images of downtown Chicago, captioned "Clark Street Bridge, Chicago, Illinois" and "Lake Street, Chicago, Illinois," respectively. The Clark Street Bridge image shows several boats on the water including a person in a rowboat, sailboats, and a steamboat, with smokestacks and other buildings in the background. The Lake Street image shows a street scene with many people walking by buildings (one building has "Hats & Furs" painted on its side) or in active conversation, some working to open crates, and horse-drawn carriages travelling past. The Lake Street illustration has the artist's name as "Damoreau". There is text between the two images and surrounding the first image which includes a passage about Chicago and a passage about "Circassian Slaves". Good overall antique condition with mild toning of the paper throughout, as well as some areas of staining and foxing mainly in the margins and heaviest along the bottom edge of page. Page measures approximately 15.25" x 11" overall.
