1869
Maker: Harper's Weekly
Antique black and white print from Harper's Weekly April 3, 1869 showing two maritime images. In April 1869, the Inman Line’s SS City of Paris (1865) and Cunard Line’s SS Russia (1867) engaged in a famous, closely matched transatlantic race, often depicted in 1869 Harper's Weekly wood-cut engravings. Both were premier iron screw-steamers of their time, with the City of Paris narrowly beating the Russia in total time to Liverpool by only 33 minutes. Good antique condition with mild toning, some wrinkling/creasing of the old paper, and a spot at top. Measures approx. 10 x 10.25 inches to the paper edges. Note: any "rainbows" or strange patterns in the image are called moire effect- caused by taking a digital photo or scan of the many parallel lines in the engraved print- these are not in the print.
