Genuine Antique Hand-Colored Map
1850
Maker: Cowperthwait.
Antique map, published by Thomas Cowperthwait & Co. in 1850. Original hand-coloring by county with railroads in orange and canals in blue. Includes a statistical table and explanation key. Inset map of Boston before the fill of Back Bay with the Mill Dam. The dam prevented the natural tides from flushing sewage out to sea, creating severe sanitary and odor problems. With costs higher and power lower than expected, in the end, the project was an economic failure, and in 1857 a massive project was begun to "make land" by filling the area enclosed by the dam. Fair overall antique condition with notable toning, some tiny spots. Measures approx. 16 x 13 inches to the neatline. Price has been adjusted based on condition.
Genuine Antique Map from 1850.
