Genuine Antique Hand-Colored Map
1855
Maker: Cowperthwait, Desilver and Butler
Antique map, published by Cowperthwait, Desilver and Butler in 1855. Original hand-coloring by county with railroads in orange and canals in blue. This map was updated to 1854 and shows notably more railroads than the pervious 1850 version. Includes a statistical table and explanation key. Inset map of Boston before the fill of Back Bay with the Mill Dam. The dam prevented the natural tides from flushing sewage out to sea, creating severe sanitary and odor problems. With costs higher and power lower than expected, in the end, the project was an economic failure, and in 1857 a massive project was begun to "make land" by filling the area enclosed by the dam. Good overall antique condition with some overall toning, some small spots. Measures approx. 11.55 x 15.25 inches to the neatline. Matted: overall size with mat is 15.5 x 19.25 inches.
Genuine Antique Map from 1855.
