Antique hand colored map of Central America showing Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, San Salvador, Costa Rica. Five inset maps showing the US constructed Panama Railway across Panama (opened in 1855), the "Nicaragua Route", the Harbor of San Juan de Nicaragua, the City of Panama, and Manzanilla Island Aspinwall City (Colon, Panama). The final opening of the Panama Canal ocurred in the early 1900s, however talk of trying to create a waterway through Central America had been going on since the 1500s and heated up in the 1800s. Very interesting pre-canal map. Very good condition with a few small brown spots and some toning. Fragile. Approx. 12.5 x 15.5 inches to the outer edge of the decorative border.
