Antique print of a view of Ancient Jerusalem published in Gleason's Pictorial Drawing Room Companion in 1853. Shows a view looking west and includes over one hundred sites with numbers that correspond to the key at the bottom, including Golgotha, the Sepulcher of Lazarus, the road to Bethlehem, the House of Maccabeus, and more. The term “woodcut” describes the method of how the print was made. Artists in the field would sketch scenes that were sent back to the newspapers. The fastest and cheapest way to create a printing block was to carve it on wood; it was the only way for “weekly” papers to publish images. For larger images, multiple woodblocks were used and you may find faint lines- these are the glue lines where smaller blocks of wood were glued together to achieve a larger print. Good overall antique condition with bonding holes at center, mild spotting, toning, and a horizontal crease. Image size is approx. 12.5 x 19.75 inches.
