Richly detailed antique hand-colored map of Scotland, by Herman Moll, published by George Grierson c. 1732. After the death of Herman Moll in 1732, Grierson produced Irish editions of Moll's maps that were no longer under copyright.
"…two editions of The World Described...[Moll's Large Atlas] were done by the Dublin publisher George Grierson... all of the maps in the Irish editions were completely re-engraved, even to the point of understandably having been rededicated to contemporary Irish notables. The Grierson atlas had new and/or changed cartouches, dedications, details, and comments. Counties delineated by color, and shows great detail of cities, towns, ports, water bodies, and landforms, with an inset map of the Shetland Islands and Orkney Islands. The map is flanked on the sides by lovely engraved illustrations of Edinburgh, Glasgow, St. Andrews, Sterling, Montrose, Aberdeen, Edinburgh Castle, Sterling Castle, Dunotyr Castle in Merns (Dunnottar Castle), The Bass, and Channery Town in Ross (Fortrose). The dedication on this map is to The Right Reverend Josiah, Lord Bishop of Kilmore and Ardagh. Very good overall antique condition, 23.25 x 39.5 inches to the neatline.
