Antique travel guide to Nantucket from 1882, compiled by Edward K Godfrey with many articles contributed by various authors, on a variety of salient topics. Full title is: The Island of Nantucket, What It Was and What It Is, Being a Complete Index and Guide to this Noted Resort containing descriptions of everything on or about the island in regard to which the visitor or resident may desire information, including its history, people, agriculture, botany, conchology and geology with maps of the town and island. Compiled by Edward K. Godfrey and published by Lee and Shepard in 1882. This book includes both original maps, specifically the well-known map of the island of Nantucket, by Rev. F.C. Ewer, D.D. originally published as a larger map in 1869, it was reduced and published in this book, and also the rare "New Map of the Streets of Nantucket Mass." by Godfrey. Godfrey's map has a delightful hand-drawn quality to it and it notes locations of Public Buildings and Places of Interest, including cemeteries, the oldest house, Alms House, etc. Ewers' map includes historical timelines from the 17th, 18th and 19th Centuries. Godfrey's map measures approx. 14. x 10.75 inches to the neatline and is printed on light-weight paper. It has a small tear at the top center. Ewers' map is approx. 14 x 21 inches to the paper edges. It is printed on light-weight paper and has a small tear in the left side and some wear along the folds. Both maps are in very good antique condition overall, paper is fragile. The book has been re-bound and the original cover is included within the book.
