Maker: Redoute

Antique botanical print showing Myrica gale, common name bog-myrtle, sweet willow, Dutch myrtle, or sweetgale. Published in Traite Des Arbres Et Arbustes Que Lon Cultive En France En Pleine Terre Artist by Duhamel du Monceau with with hand-colored engravings by the artist Pierre Joseph Redouté. He employed the newly developed process of stipple engraving, a process in which the image was composed of a series of dots on a copper plate. Color was added 'a la poupee'; applied with rags directly to the plate each time the plate is printed. Additional hand-coloring was applied in order to achieve the subtlety of color Redoute desired. Good to very good antique condition with mild toning of the paper and some tiny spots. Page has been trimmed by a previous owner and measures approximately 12.5 x 9.5 inches overall. Approx. 11.75 x 9 inches to the platemark.
