Antique print of birds by Francois Nicolas Martinet published in Planches Enluminées D'Histoire Naturelle, to accompany Buffon's Histoire des Oiseaux, circa 1770. Martinet worked with a team of people to create this encyclopedic book on ornithology, which took years to complete. It was originally issued in 42 cahiers of 24 hand-colored plates each, with no accompanying text or titles, resulting in 1008 plates. The book included carefully detailed prints of birds from around the world. Original hand-coloring. Very good condition with some minor waviness/wrinkles in the antique paper. Copper plate print on laid paper. Measures approx. 8.75 x 7 inches to the outer border.
