1848
Maker: U.S. Coast Survey.
This rare Nantucket Harbor Massachusetts Chart, was made by the U.S. C. S. (US Coast Survey), dated 1848. The Great Fire of Nantucket occurred in 1846, so this chart was likely the first chart published after the fire. It features hand-drawn concentric circles radiating out from the Brant Point Lighthouse at 1/4 mile distances. At top are two recognition profiles showing views on the approach to Nantucket Harbor. This chart includes sailing directions in the lower right. It measures approximately 14 x 17.25 inches to the neatline. It is in very good restored condition, with some minor signs of age remaining, including a repaired tear at left side and general mild toning.
